Today we are venturing off to Ojai to meet with our family photographer to shoot our very first set of professional photos for our holiday cards (post + Minted giveaway coming soon!!). I love an opportunity to get professional photos done because it’s an investment in memories that are captured at a specific time in our lives. This year is made even more special because Greyson is finally here to share in all of our family’s traditions. You see, he will be celebrating his very first Christmas this year which made me realize that I must do whatever I could to preserve this moment forever.
And in keeping with the early Christmas celebration theme (yes, I’m not ashamed that after Halloween I’m on the Christmas bandwagon) today I’m sharing my favorite ways to make baby’s first Christmas a special one.
Am I the only one that gets excited for holiday cards? I love seeing the new designs every year from Minted who are my go-to designers for our Christmas cards (see last year). Holiday cards are a great way to share in the season with family and friends – especially for us since we live so far away from everyone. It’s a chance to exchange a little holiday cheer (and not to mention cute photos of baby Greyson) and makes for an easy baby keepsake.
At the end of the month I’m excited to unveil this year’s holiday card and work in partnership with Minted to offer an amazing giveaway with three winners! More info coming soon!
A Keepsake Ornament
A tradition that we’ve started as husband and wife, and now with baby, are collecting ornaments every year that represents us as a family. Some of the very first ornaments I had were from previous students so it’s always enjoyable to reminisce while trimming the tree. Since moving to California two years ago, our first ornament was a California shaped ornament symbolizing our move to the golden coast. My mom also sent us an ornament celebrating our first Christmas as a married couple, which was super sweet.
Last year we picked up a wooden rooster from our anniversary trip to Kauai and I also made a salt dough paw print ornament for Murphy as a keepsake considering he is a large part of our family as well. And of course my tree isn’t complete unless I hang my little Starbucks #redcup for obvious reasons. This year’s ornament we picked one up from the gift shop at Hearst Castle when we were visiting Cambria this past summer. I also plan to make a salt dough handprint as a little reminder of how tiny Greyson is knowing he’s only getting bigger!
I love holding onto little pieces of clothing from when Greyson was a newborn; from his coming home outfit to a favorite onesie. It allows me to hold onto a time when he was tiny because I know he continues to grow every day. Having a tradition of wearing Christmas jammies is a fun way to celebrate the season, especially his first Christmas!
Holiday Themed Children’s Books
Although this technically transcends different holidays, picking up or gifting a new book to Greyson for Christmas is a tradition I can’t wait to start. I loved our storybook themed baby shower last year because we were able to stock his little library and since birth he’s loved getting to discover all of his books! At eight months old he already loves reading so much and I look forward to picking up a book here and there every year.
Pictures With Santa
This is quintessential for any family! Last year we took Murphy to get his picture taken with Santa Paws (yes, we’re those people) and it was so adorable. I’m pretty sure h had no idea what was going on but us, humans, got a real kick out of it. Now that Greyson is here with us I’m more than excited to begin this family tradition of getting his picture taken with Santa. Fingers crossed for no crying!
Make It Your Own
At the end of the day no matter what you do for Christmas it will be a cherished memory. From beginning new traditions with your little family to sharing in old ones passed down, time spent with friends and family is what this season is all about. I can’t wait to share with Greyson my favorite holiday and I apologize in advance for all of the gratuitous baby photos that will be filling your Instagram feed next month #sorrynotsorry.
What do you plan to do to celebrate your littles first Christmas? Have you seen any pin-worthy inspirations? Share them in the comments!
