Last year around New Years everyone I knew were choosing words that would define their life in 2017. It was almost like a resolution, or goal, that would encourage them those next 12 months. Although I didn’t choose a word, but rather a quote, one word kept coming back to me all year long- nudging and poking at me. That word was: intentional.
But, what does that look like?
To live an intentional year in 2017 not only meant that I would try and be deliberate in the various choices I would make, but moreso to consistently choose purpose over personal convenience. All throughout this year I have found purpose in many ways – whether they be through grueling personal trials, relationships, letting sh*t go, or digging deep into my character and values. In my Beth Moore study she refers to this as ‘sifting.’ And boy did I do a lot of sifting through myself this year! To acknowledge there’s work to be done within myself wasn’t an easy task, but a necessary one in order to live a freed life – a more intentional life.
Living intentionally and with purpose also affected my spiritual relationships and remains a goal of mine to spend more time studying God’s Word.
It’s one thing to set a goal, but it’s another to actually make steps towards achieving it. It was difficult at first for me because I realized that I chose personal convenience over a dedicated time with God. I allowed time to slip by whether it was here on the blog, at my shop, with television, or just browsing social media. Days would go by and soon I noticed my prayer life was dwindling and that feeling of, I got this, crept in once more. Yes, we continued to go to church every Sunday and my soul continued to be filled. But something greater was happening and I found myself choosing convenience over purpose. It’s a slippery slope, my friends, and the Evil One is banking on us falling victim to it every time.
How I’m living it out.
Thankfully I got a hold of it and all year I’ve been taking several steps to be intentional with my time with God and here are a few ways I’ve been successful with it.
Small Groups | Being involved in a small group is a non-negotiable for me. I love the study we’re working on now and it’s given me plenty to reflect on!
First 5 App | I love this free devotional app! These devotionals and studies have been a huge help in digesting and reflecting on Scripture and only takes about five minutes of your day. I appreciate the real life applications and the opportunities to connect with others about various topics and readings.
Advent Devotional | This is my first year working through an Advent devotional, I’m so happy that my husband is doing it with me! As Christmas approaches we’re digging into the Bible and truly understanding what Jesus’ birth represents. I love how much we’re learning and understanding!
JOYFUL Prayer Journal | I am so excited to share this new journal that hit my shop just this week! I don’t know about you, but I love writing down my prayers, thoughts, feelings, and scriptures that speak to me. This journal is the perfect size to get all of it down and even comes in four different rulings: plain, grid, bullet, and lined. And why keep such a wonderful thing all to myself? Now you can pick one up too and help my family in the process!
* All shop proceeds directly assist my family in recovering from the Thomas Fire in our hometown of Ventura.
Since I’ve taken these few steps, I’ve seen a huge difference within myself. I love the knowledge I’m gaining because it allows me to alter my mindset and make different choices for my life. I’m excited for where this purposeful life is taking me and I can’t help but encourage you all to do the same!
How are you already living an intentional life? Was there a word that defined your 2017? I’d love to hear about your year!
