Every year around this time I always like to think about the year ahead and how I can encourage and motivate myself towards better living. Last year the word I chose for myself was intentional. I wanted to live more intentionally with my goals, my relationships and marriage, my time and what filled my schedule, and, most importantly, my time with God. As I moved through 2017 I prayed hard about how and where I could be more intentional and I am thankful that it was a year filled with multiple opportunities to do so.
Spiritually, I joined a small group at church, started being more proactive about my time with God and digging into Scripture using helpful apps like First 5. Creatively, I created my own little lettering shop on Etsy. I also spent time reevaluating my blog here and am coming back with a refreshed soul for new content! Being intentional with my relationships was also super important for me and I gave myself permission to let some things go, work on others, and remember my own self-care in the process.
A word to describe 2018
So when 2017 came to a close last week I’ve been busy thinking about what word I’d like to influence me this year. It took a moment, but thanks to a car ride conversation with my husband I narrowed it down to…simplify.
My goal this year is to simplify my life in multiple aspects, beginning with unburdening my schedule. With returning to work and entering into a new season of life it is important that I have the balance to dedicate myself to my job, my personal goals, and being an amazing mom. Oftentimes I have guilt over the things that go by the wayside or projects I begin but can’t dedicate myself to 100%.
A simplified schedule.
One way I’ve already simplified my schedule was saying no. For example, I’ve decided to make my Etsy shop a seasonal lettering shop instead of a full-time venture. In the fall I plan to provide custom lettering on decor pumpkins and go through to the holidays with ornaments, signs, and coffee mugs. This last holiday season was a successful time for me and instead of trying to make something work all year long I felt it was important to keep it fun and dedicate my attention and time to other things.
This season is also all about new routines. With me going back to work part-time and Greyson heading to daycare, it was important for me to fit in the gym and make it an intentional part of my daily routine. Something for me. So, after work I go straight to the gym for an hour then pick up Grey to return home and have my evenings with him and my husband. I’ve been telling myself to begin making my health a priority and being active is a big part of that. With my first week into this new routine proven successful, it’s given me the encouragement to continue with this goal.
A simplified home.
If you follow me pretty regularly here you’ll know that I love the concept of living minimally. I give all the credit to my husband who has always been a pretty solid minimalist – he just didn’t know the term until this past year. He first introduced me to this crazy idea that we don’t have to be consumed with our stuff. That a life well lived has more to do with our experiences or connections with people and not so much in the things we buy or collect. I couldn’t agree more and slowly over time I found myself really enjoying the purging process!
Today, and this year, I plan to simplify our home. This could mean physically in terms of moving to a smaller apartment that serves us as a family better or it could mean being intentional about how often we go through our things and purge those unnecessary items. Just this past weekend I felt this desire to go through and donate Greyson’s unused and older toys to his daycare, rummage through our closets to see if we could donate or consign our things as well, and to finally clear out junk drawers and throw away old inflatable mattresses. By the end of the day we felt so free from the clutter and hopeful that our donations go on to bless others.
I’m truly excited to see where my simplification goals take me this year. I am faithful in that by simplifying my life in a number of ways I’ll free up so much more of myself to enjoy my family, my work, and continuing to make connections whether it’s here on the blog or in the real world.
What word or goal do you have for yourself in 2018? I’d love to hear how you’re going to make this year your best year yet!
